Rail Workers Say Thanks to Ipswich; Union Lifted by Public's Stance over QR

RAIL workers at QR's Redbank workshops have thanked the Ipswich community for supporting them in their fight against the state government's privatisation plans at a union meeting on Thursday.

More than 200 workers turned up to the 7am meeting, which was held at the Redbank workshop with state representatives from the Queensland Rail Tram & Bus Union (RTBU).

RTBU state secretary Owen Doogan said the Redbank workers had been buoyed by the wider community's strong stance against the sale of public-owned assets.

"There was a general feeling of gratitude - and one local member got up and made the point that they were thankful to the Ipswich and Queensland community for their support over this issue," Mr Doogan said.

"There were lots of comments about that support; it has given a lot of workers a lift knowing the public is on their side."

He said the workers feared for the future of their jobs, despite assurances their positions would be kept safe for at least two years after the QR's coal haulage operation is sold. …
