Rain Casts Cloud over Race Day; Decision This Morning on Whether Horses Get a Start at Tabulam

IT'S THE race that stops Tabulam - if the weather holds.

It might not attract the 100,000-strong crowd that gathered at Flemington for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, but the enthusiasm of the few thousand planning to turn out today for Tabulam's annual race meeting will be just as strong.

The Tabulam Cup is worth $4000 for the winner - not quite the $5.5 million Shocking picked up - and the fashions are more jeans and mud-caked RM Williams than glamorous frocks and high-heeled shoes.

Weather permitting, the tiny town will play host to five races today, beginning at 1pm.

The biggest prize of $4500 is for the Sam Hordern Memorial race which has a full field. There are eight runners in the Tabulam Cup.

"They're very good fields for Tabulam," Northern Rivers Racing Association chief steward Craig Pringle said.
