Green Warriors Flying the Flag; Little Green Champions at Newcastle Schools Have Been Rewarded for Their Efforts as AMY HUNT Reports

GREEN flags are flying over city schools. More youngsters in Newcastle have seen their environmental efforts honoured as part of the city's EnviroSchools programme.

Launched in 2001 as the Tidy Schools Awards Initiative to deal with litter and improve school environments, EnviroSchools quickly developed into something bigger.

It now uses education and activities to inspire children and young people to care for their local area and put things back into their communities.

Any Newcastle School can sign up to the EnviroSchools scheme, run by Newcastle City Council.

It is an award-based scheme, starting with two unique awards from the city, leading to Encams' international Eco-Schools Award and culminating in the Green Flag mark of environmental excellence.

One of the latest schools to receive the coveted Green Flag was West Walker Primary.

Pupils from the school were presented with tReir Green Flag by the Lord Mayor Mike Cookson and the Lady Mayoress, his wife Dorrie.

The school takes part in a host of environmental activities, including recycling, switch off campaigns to help the children learn about saving energy and a gardening club.

Helen Carr, the school's environmental co-ordinator, said: "We have done lots of things. We recycle our plastic milk bottles, as well as paper. We've got several gardens that the children help to look after. We have a bike shelter that the older children use instead of getting a lift to school.

"We have made these things part of school life to give the children the awareness that they can take care of the environment and make changes."

Headteacher Nichola Draper said: "The environment is a really high priority for us. It will be nice to see the flag flying from the flagpole above the school."

Elsewhere in the city Westfield Senior School in Gosforth made history by becoming the first senior school in Newcastle to receive Green Flag status.

Earlier this year the school's Junior House was also awarded the accolade. …
