Money Talks; but Boro Are under No Pressure to Sell Johnson

DON'T be fooled into thinking it's written in stone that Adam Johnson is leaving the Boro in January.

Boro are under no pressure at all to sell their jinking wing wonder.

But if you believe what you read, then it's cut and dried that Boro are ready to accept any one of a number of multi-million pounds bids for the livewire winger.

We are told that all the big clubs in Europe are queuing up with massive offers to try to tempt Boro to sell.

Only last weekend it was reported that Boro had already agreed a pounds 7m deal with Sunderland for Jonno to move to his home-town club.

The real truth is that Boro have done a deal with nobody - nor do they want to.

Johnson remains not only a prize asset at the Boro, but a key figure in the promotion push.

With nine goals already under his belt, and more to come, both from his own boots and from assists, Boro are well aware of the need to hang on to the 22-year-old.

They are determined to keep the former England Under-21 international - until the end of the season at least.

Naturally we shouldn't be surprised if big clubs do come sniffing.

Boro can expect to receive a wealth of inquiries, starting next month.

But few clubs will consider making a ridiculous offer for Johnson when they know they can get him on the cheap next summer -when his Boro contract runs out.

Money talks. It certainly did at Boro last summer.

But January is not normally a time of big-money transfers.

That's why Boro should be able to rebuff all interested parties.

Certainly they are under no pressure from the banks to sell. They've already sorted out that side of their affairs, for the time being at least.

In any case, what's the point of accepting a few million pounds for Johnson when Boro know they will be awarded a similar figure in compensation for the player in the summer. …
