CADDICK BROTHERS -Winners "I wouldn't want to see something like that happen to my mum, my nan, or anybody's nan," says Bryan Caddick, as he modestly tries to explain away his bravery.

The 27-year-old and brother Kevin sprang into action last year when they saw a mugger snatch a bag from an old lady.

Bernadette Leadstone, then 77, had been to collect her pension from the Post Office on Middlesbrough's Cargo Fleet Lane when the scumbag struck.

He lay in wait then ran after the grandmother, grabbing her bag containing nearly pounds 250.

The Caddicks were driving their van past when they saw the robbery.

Kevin, 28, rushed to Bernadette's aid and comforted the distressed pensioner while Bryan charged after the thief, bringing him down with a rugby tackle and holding him until police arrived to make their arrest.

A judge at Teesside Crown Court jailed the mugger for 18 months, and praised the "spirited intervention" of the pair.

Bernadette told the Gazette: "I was very grateful to them. I do think it was brave. That lad could have had a knife or anything."

And if that wasn't enough, last December dad-of-five Kevin pulled an injured motorist from a burning car, paying no regard to his own safety and the potential danger he faced.

Bryan said he and his brother were over the moon to be nominated.

"I know we'd both do the same things all over again, too," he added.
