BLAYDON employed two emergency scrum-halves at Sedgeley Park, but still stole away with a fine and important 12-11 win.

The Crow Trees men lost rugby director and No 9 stand-in Tom Rock to a thigh injury after 20minutes, and so flanker Scott Riddell stepped into the breach.

Given that player-coach Rock has been filling in at half-back in the absence of two first-choice options, calling on the Scotland Sevens international flanker was not part of the plans.

But Riddell stood up well, and Blaydon came away with their fourth straight National One victory. Tries from full-back Adam Dehaty and prop Justin Clarke with a conversion from centre Andrew Baggett proved enough for Blaydon then, with the home side only mustering a try and two penalties from Stephen Nutt.

Things at Tynedale could not have been further removed from the contest down at Sedgeley, with the Corbridge men dispatching Manchester with the expected ease.

The only disappointment in the 15-try 93-0 mauling for Tom Borthwick's men will have been their inability to pass the 100-point mark. …
