SKIPPER George Bailey and Travis Birt guided Tasmania to a comprehensive six-wicket win over a star-studded NSW line-up at North Sydney Oval yesterday.

Chasing 272 for victory, Bailey (81) and Birt (71no) put on a telling fourth-wicket stand of 97 in 79 balls as the Tigers reached the target with 24 balls to spare.

Young NSW all-rounder Steve Smith (81 off 59 balls) earlier saved his big-name team-mates from serious blushes with a scintillating knock to lift the home side to 8-271 from their 50 overs.

Every member of the NSW top six has played for Australia in at least one form of the game, but all struggled against a crafty Tasmanian attack on a pitch holding up a bit early on.

The main talking points before the match surrounded the performances of Australia vice-captain Michael Clarke with the bat and Brett Lee with the ball, before the opening Test against the West Indies later this month in Brisbane.

Clarke, in his first match in just under two months, looked scratchy for his eight runs, spending less time at the crease than signing autographs. …
