Sixteen local Hispanic students recently were awarded $2,000 "Achieving the Dream" scholarships for higher education, a news release says.

The First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce awarded scholarships to:

- Erika Sologuren, an honor student studying civil engineering at Miami Dade College.

- Ismel Liriano, a Florida Youth Challenge Academy student who plans to pursue a business degree at the University of Northwestern Ohio.

- Krsha Sendon, an honor student at the University of Florida. She is majoring in sociology and minoring in international humanitarian assistance and organizational leadership for nonprofits.

- Hector Vasquez, a University of North Florida student seeking a degree in mechanical engineering.

- Irina Skinner, a graduate student at the University of Florida. She is studying wildlife ecology and conservation.

- Indira Cardenas, a UNF honor student majoring in criminal justice.

- Diana Rojas, a UNF health major, plans to earn a doctorate degree in physical therapy.

- Sharlene Velez, a Florida State College of Jacksonville student, plans to pursue a doctorate of physical therapy at UNF.

Those who were given scholarships by the Mayor's Hispanic American Advisory Board:

- Jose Barrientos Restrepo is working on a double major - economics and international business - at UNF. He also is pursuing two minors - urban and metropolitan studies and international studies.

- Marjorie Ann Perea is working on a elementary education degree at Jacksonville University.

- Michael Rivera is majoring in civil engineerirng at UNF.

- Alejandra Isai Arreguin attends FSCJ and is working on a marketing degree.

- Alissa Alterman attends optometry school at Nova Southeastern University in Davie.

- Diego F. Molina attends the Coggin College of Business at UNF, majoring in business administration.

- Trudy Abadie is working on a doctorate degree in educational leadership at UNF.

- Lucia Allen is working on a degree in Spanish at UNF. …
