College Smackdown; Homecoming Was Georgia as Season Should Have Been

Homecoming in Athens was just like it was supposed to be. A crisp, clear fall day with the Dawgs winning big, scoring lots of points early, and riding out the second half on cruise control. Homecoming also turned out to be Freshman Day, with the young players accounting for all four touchdowns in the first half. With place-kicker Blair Walsh's 24-yard field goal, the Dawgs led 31-0 at intermission.

In the first half, the team was running on all cylinders. Quarterback Joe Cox looked like a veteran, scrambling around and finding open receivers. The blockers were blocking, the runners were running, and the defense was jumping around and flying to the ball on every play. It was like Georgia football of old! What we fans expect! The way Georgia football is supposed to be!

OK, here comes the buts: But it was Homecoming; But it was Tennessee Tech, not Tennessee; But it wasn't Georgia Nerd Tech, it was Football Championship Subdivision Tennessee Tech of the mighty Ohio Valley Conference; But we still received 11 penalties for 86 yards; But we still lost the turnover battle, giving up one interception and not forcing any Golden Eagle turnovers.

All these buts leave me with some other thoughts and what ifs? What if the Dawgs had opened up in Sanford Stadium against, say, Creampuff University instead of traveling west of the Mississippi and taking on Oklahoma State; and then what if, after a couple of SEC opponents, the Dawgs took a breather with someone such as, say, Pansy State University before finishing the season with our biggest rivals?

One thing's for sure. Defense proved it can be dominant against a Football Championship Subdivision team by posting its first shutout since 2006. The "D" also proved that defensive coordinator Willie Martinez would be a genius in Football Championship Subdivision football if he could play with Georgia-caliber athletes! …
