Relax, You Cool Cats, at Dos Gatos; Latest Addition to Downtown Nightlife Is Classy and Comfy

Capifanos, say "hola" to Dos Gatos, the newest lounge to add critical mass to downtown night life. Owners, and potential candidates for Jacksonville's best-looking couple, Jason and Joy Albertelli are celebrating Dos Gatos' grand opening tonight after a week-long practice run.

Dos Gatos' location is tough to beat: directly across from the Florida Theatre. Jason Albertelli told me the location appealed to him because it would allow him to add "depth" to our downtown scene. As we sat enjoying the stylish comfort of his padded, zebrawood bar, he noted that "No other major city puts all its bars on one street and calls it good. Our location brings connectivity between the Burrito Gallery [Adams Street] and the Bay Street bars."

As far as the Albertelli's vision for Dos Gatos, they sought a sexy, rock 'n' roll neighborhood cocktail lounge specializing in drinks poured by people who know what they're doing. "Some bar owners take the customer for granted, thinking they'll drink whatever you serve them and like it. The truth is, people have a lot of choices about where to go, so service has to be your point of differentiation," Albertelli explained

Dos Gatos' speciality drink menu hearkens back to classic cocktail culture, trading candy flavors for aromatics, fresh juices and high-end liquor selections, all while remaining budget-conscious. The look of the place is reminiscent of a pinup era, from the pressed tin ceiling tiles, to the low-light chandeliers, to the fuzzy, yes fuzzy, wallpaper. A mural of a Bettie Page-type and her little kitten serves as the over-the-bar centerpiece.

Guest comfort is clearly a goal in the design of the space. The padded bar, purse hooks and super-comfy stools invite you to settle in and stay for a while. The back room of Dos Gatos, dubbed the whiskey barrel for its eye-catching barrel vault ceiling, has a host of cozy booths just right for lounging. …
