Tour Kick-Starts Career; Five Line Up for Fiji Trip

TOOWOOMBA hockey player Nathan Doherty admits he was surprised to earn a call-up to the Australian Country under 21 side, but it may be just the kick-start his burgeoning career needed.

Doherty didn't attend this year's Australian Country hockey titles, but his form with Toowoomba and at club level in the Garden City had attracted some attention.

The talented keeper will now line up alongside fellow Toowoomba players Lincoln Parkinson, Kyle Rush, Heath Sampson and Donald Miller at the Pacific tournament in Fiji next month.

Parkinson and Reeves played for South Australia at the Australian Country Championships, while Miller and Sampson were members of the Queensland Country team.

Doherty is looking forward to his first taste of international action.

"I was a bit surprised I got called up, but they were looking for a second keeper and my name came up," Doherty said.

"It's going to be an incredible experience - a massive learning experience. …
