THE natural beauty of the Bellinger Valley is a focus of many businesses based in the town. Surrounded by prime agricultural land, the town has a higher than average number of growers and farmers.

Focusing on that locally produced food is a long-term vision of Kevin and Lowanna Doye - and something they put into practice when they set up their Hyde Street business, Kombu Wholefoods.

"We are now at the point where close to 50 per cent of the produce on the shelves is locally grown," Kevin said.

"Getting the food onto the shelves as quickly as we can - sometimes only an hour or two after it has been picked - means that the food is still buzzing with taste and goodness."

In line with their sustainability-based philosophy, Lowanna and Kevin also recently turned the busy store into a not-for-profit business. This means that any profits at the end of each tax year will be ploughed back into the business and the local community rather than to the business owners. …
