GPC to Probe Dust Incident

THE Gladstone Ports Corporation is investigating a dust incident at RG Tanna Coal Loading Terminal after being asked to look into the matter by the Department of Environmental and Resource Management yesterday and last Thursday.

Clean and Healthy Air for Gladstone committee member Paul Tooker yesterday informed the Gladstone office of the department that coal dust plumes were rising from the northern end of the facility.

He said the plumes "seem to be almost a daily occurrence - this one is huge". Mr Tooker asked DERM if the GPC was still required to report coal dust events to the department.

Another resident, Graham McVean, said that every morning there was a smell of benzene in the air.

"I am told by Professor Thomas Faunce (of the Australian National University's College of Law and Medical School) that this is the result of the coal dust meeting the morning dew," he said.

Don Arnold of the Gladstone office of the department informed Mr Tooker by email that he had asked the GPC yesterday to address the dust issue as soon as possible. …
