Centre Work Is Set to Start; but Questions Remain over Where Youngsters Will Go While New Building Goes Up

A START is to be made early in the new year on demolishing the existing Whinney Banks Youth and Community Centre in Middlesbrough and rebuilding it.

West Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Trust and Middlesbrough Council say they will continue to work closely with a range of partners to ensure there are suitable alternatives while no community centre is available.

But young people who use the existing centre say they still do not know what the temporary arrangements are going to be.

The new centre is being built on the Whinney Banks school site.

The project is a key part of the on-going regeneration of Central Whinney Banks and the provision of health and community facilities for residents in the Acklam Green area.

A condition of the closure of the existing centre is that suitable interim facilities for its users are provided throughout the building period.

Middlesbrough mayor Ray Mallon said: "I can give a personal guarantee to the community in this particular area and to the people of Middlesbrough as a whole that West Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Trust will build another centre. …
