AFTER having lived only in Bundaberg, Margaret and Herb Linwood decided it was time for a change of scenery and a new job.

Herb moved to Benaraby to work as a part-time night officer in the railway. Meeting new people everyday from all over Queensland, he was told that life in Gladstone would be a chance for a better lifestyle. Herb and Margaret jumped at the opportunity and with one ring to QAL he was set up with a permanent job and double the pay.

Life wasn't always easy for the Linwoods. They started off small, living in a caravan through the floods, until they could afford a deposit on a house in Barney Point. Through determination and hard work they finally own the house they live in today in Toolooa. Now retired and living the simple life, they both reminisce about the move to Gladstone in 1971.

"Fishing in the creeks was brilliant, I would always come home with something," Herb said.

They can still remember their old neighbour who owned a small shop in Gladstone. …
