THERE'S a BIG new addition to Middlesbrough this festive season.

The town's 40m high wheel is now turning in Centre Square -giving breaktaking views across Teesside. The stunning new addition to the local skyline has been brought to town thanks to a partnership between Middlesbrough Council and operators Great City Attractions.

Twice the height of the Angel of the North, the wheel has 30 glass-sided and climate-controlled observation pods, each able to carry up to eight people, with a specially recorded on-board commentary.

Rides last around 12 minutes and feature three revolutions of the wheel.

It has taken 12 days to put up the wheel, which weighs 240 tonnes.

Prices are pounds 4 adults, children under one free, children aged one to three pounds 1, children aged four to 16 pounds 3, OAPs pounds 3, a family ticket for two adults and two children pounds 10, a private capsule pounds 25, the VIP capsule seating four people pounds 40 or pounds 55 with champagne.

Opening hours are noon-7pm Monday to Friday, 11am-7pm on Saturday and Sunday. * VISIT Santa's Grotto in the North Drift of the Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum at Skinningrove on Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am to 3.30pm. * FATHER Christmas will be pulling into Head Of Stream -Darlington Railway Museum this weekend. Visit his grotto from 11am-3pm Saturday and Sunday and receive a present for your child.

Santa will also be at the museum on December 12, 13 and 19. Admission is adult pounds 4.95, 6 to 16-year-olds pounds 3.95, under-fives free, family ticket (two adults and two children) pounds 10. Head to Centre Square for the 3k charity event; while Butterwick Hospice is holding its three-mile Santa Run on Sunday at Hardwick Hall Hotel in Sedgefield, following the route of the Hardwick lake and park. …
