ENGLAND cricket ace Stephen Harmison surprised youngsters at his former school yesterday when he dropped by to help them celebrate a special sport's day.

The Durham fast bowler paid a visit to Bothal Middle School, in Ashington, for a ceremony after it achieved sports college status.

He also officially opened a new pounds 500,000 refurbished sports block and took time out to wow young fans and showcase his bowling skills in a friendly game of cricket with students. Harmison, who attended the school up until 1992, said the visit brought back memories of his days doing PE outdoors. "I loved PE, but I can remember when we played outside it was cold, but it was even colder inside.

"The place was falling to bits. My daughter is in Year 6 here at the school as well, so to see it now is fantastic. "To make it into a sports college is great because I don't think enough money goes into sports in schools. It's great to look around the room and see so many smiling faces. …
