Teesside Must Consider Life after Corus

EVER since Corus first announced its plans to mothball the Teesside Cast Products plant in May, the uncertainty surrounding the fate of the site has cast a long shadow over the North East.

While orders continued to flow into Teesside, hope remained that a viable long-term solution could be found. Yesterday that hope - faint though it may have been - was extinguished.

The ramifications of this decision will be felt well beyond the communities in the immediate vicinity of the plant, such is the size of the contribution it makes to the North East economy, and the anger felt by workers is understandable.

Having fought such a brave battle to save the plant they are right to ask if Corus's Indian owners could have worked harder to find an alternative contract after the original consortium pulled out of its deal in May. They are right to question the appetite at the very top of this organisation to explore every possible option for the site's future. …
