THE Pass at Byron Bay is an iconic part of the North Coast. We love it. It offers a unique amenity to a great range of users.

Now the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Reserve Trust have a plan to 'improve' the place by commercialising it. The past few years have seen the Cape Byron Reserve Trust upgrade cottages into prime holiday lettings at Clarks Beach. I'm sure staying there would be a wonderful experience.

The NPWS seems intent on being a landlord rather than meeting its key function of protecting habitat and providing recreational amenity for the people of NSW.

The accountants in Sydney have cut funding, so finding income sources has become paramount. But does that mean that every structure within the reserve must be turned to maximum income production?

The plan seems to be to turn The Pass Cafe into accommodation and for a new kiosk to be erected where the public toilets now stand. The area that so many of us enjoy picnicking in, watching the sunset over the water, will become the kiosk forecourt, paved and devoid of spirit. …
