Dog's Draining Ordeal

IT was dark, lonely and there seemed to be no way out.

The only thing Mustard the Labrador could do was pant and bark as he waited to be rescued from the claustrophobic concrete walls which surrounded him.

What started as a curious wander down a drainpipe near the South Mackay hockey fields turned pear-shaped when the seven-year-old pooch found himself stuck down a city drain on Monday night.

As Mustard poked his snout out of the drain opening, all he could see were the wheels of cars - and the odd pair of feet - passing him by.

But luckily for Mustard, one of those pairs of feet belonged to John Reponen, who spotted the distressed dog.

"I was walking along and I saw his snout sticking out of the gutter," Mr Reponen said. "I thought what is that? It's a bloody dog!"

But Mustard's ordeal was far from over. He still had to get out of that concrete box and his owner was nowhere to be seen. …
