Grand Tour Aims to Downsize Homes as Mackay Fills Up

WITH its population predicted to hit 200,000 by 2030, Mackay needs to start thinking outside the 700sq m block when it comes to housing.

So, Mackay Regional Council is organising a two-day development study tour to Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Sydney early next year.

Planning and development portfolio councillor Diane Hatfield said members of the industry, including developers, builders and real estate agents, were invited to join the tour on February 4 and 5, 2010.

The trip would take industry members to development sites that offered innovative ideas for smaller homes and units to cater for those who didn't need the traditional four-bedroom house on a 700sq m block, she said.

This was important given Mackay's population was predicted to grow significantly in the future, she said.

The trip would also give attendees some clever ideas for things like greywater and sewage systems, Cr Hatfield said. …
