4, 3, 2, 1- It's the party night of the year, a chance to celebrate the year that has been and toast the year ahead. Some might argue that there's no such thing as the perfect NYE party, but they clearly haven't read The Observer's guide to all things NYE, including where to party and what to wear. So read on to plan the perfect NYE.

So first things first, you need to determine just what it is you want to be doing on the last night of the year. A small party with friends, hitting the town, a nice meal out? While it is known as the party night of the year, be honest with yourself - don't go to a party just because you think you should when you'd rather spend it at home watching the fireworks on TV.

If you plan to eat out make sure you make reservations are early as possible as restaurants book out very quickly for NYE. Also check if the restaurant has a special menu or price for the night to avoid disappointment or confusion.

So to combat that last-minute panic, it pays to be prepared. Many of the parties at the venues in town have a fancy dress theme which narrows the options down. Michael Matz from Bojangles said he was holding a beach themed party so people could come out in whatever they had been wearing earlier in the night.

"A lot of people go to family BBQs or the beach on NYE and just want to come out for a dance and a kiss and cuddle at midnight, so the venue will be catering for this," he said.

If you're not going to a fancy-dress party then you'll want the perfect party dress. …
