THE likes of Dean Mercer and Met Caloundra's Chloe Jones will be forced to qualify for the Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Series the hard way with news the remaining positions in the field will be determined at the wildcard trials this summer.

The six places (three men and three women) to be filled in each round will be decided at the trials, to be held the day before rounds one and two at Kurrawa, rounds three and four at Alexandra Headland and the final at Cronulla.

Originally, the Australian selectors were to announce two wildcards (one male and one female) following last weekend's Tugun trials with the final four to be decided at the wildcard trials.

With the likes of 20-year series veteran Dean Mercer (injury) and long-standing Series competitor Wes Berg (glandular fever) both relying on wildcards for the men's series and just six points separating the last six women, selectors recommended that all remaining six places be decided at the three wildcard trials. …
