Whitley's Cup Dream Ended; Disputed Spot-Kick Kills off Brave Bay

WHITLEY Bay went out of the FA Women's Cup after going down 3-2 to Rochdale at Hillheads.

Whitley matched their higher-league opponents from the off with little to choose between the sides early on.

Both teams attacked and defended with great determination, but it was Rochdale who made the breakthrough on 20 minutes when their left-winger broke free and crashed a great shot into the roof of the net.

Whitley fought back but the sides cancelled each other out, the only scoring chance a great Emma Philipson strike which hit the post.

On the half-hour, Whitley did level the match as Mel Carr played a great ball through the Rochdale defence for Kate St Louis to reach before the goalkeeper and slide into the net.

After the interval, Rochdale pressed forward - and on 56 minutes a cross from the right was headed home to give the away side the advantage.

MEL CARR Two minutes later, the entire visiting defence stood still and watched as Carr beat the offside trap and calmly side-footed home for the equaliser. …
