Two Clay County high school graduates are helping the St. Johns River Community College men's basketball team (10-1) break into the top 10 (currently ranked No. 9) in NJCAA Region 8 state rankings.

Clarence Tillman, a 6-foot-4, 188-pound guard from Orange Park High, was named player of the week by the Florida Community College Activities Association the week of Nov. 10. Tillman is averaging 18 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game.

Tony Baker, a 6-foot-3, 178-pound guard, also from Orange Park High, is averaging 10 points per game with 5.2 rebounds per game.

SJRCC men's basketball coach Buster Harvey said Tillman and Baker are enjoying fine sophomore seasons.

"They've been very productive in every aspect of the game," Harvey said. "They've played real well on the defensive and offensive ends. They're really hard workers and they're overachieving because of their work ethic. They are good athletes."

Harvey said he was pleased with the top 10 ranking.

"It's a pride thing," Harvey said. "It gives you a little bit of credibility and makes you think you are reaching some of your goals, but it really doesn't count until we start conference play in January."
