Region's Swimmers Put Stamp on State Titles

GLADSTONE region swimmers are making their way to the top of the state ladder.

Gladiators Alex Williams won his first individual medal of the 2009 meet on Monday night, placing second in the 14-years 100m backstroke.

Second fastest qualifier leading into the final, Williams placed behind his Townsville rival Kyle Leong in a time of 1.00.86.

Then yesterday, Williams put himself in further medal contention by qualifying second and third fastest respectively for the 100m freestyle and 400m IM finals. Team mate Chris Hansen joined Williams in the freestyle final, qualifying eighth fastest in a personal best time of 56.61.

Also coming close to making a final was 13-year old Andrew McLean who finished 12th in the 100m butterfly.

Fifteen-year-old Joseph Richards clocked a national championships qualifying time for the 100m freestyle.

Club spokeswoman Carol McLean said Joseph had an impressive swim.

"It was a fantastic time and swim," she said. …
