DRAMA AT THE JOB CENTRE; Man Threatens to Set Himself Alight: Man in Job Centre Drama

STAFF and customers watched in horror as a man doused himself in turpentine before threatening to set himself on fire in a Teesside JobCentre.

The 49-year-old man, from the Middlesbrough area, poured the substance over himself before making the bizarre threat at the Thorntree branch yesterday.

Police rushed to the scene on The Greenway just before 9am. The man, who was a JobCentre customer, was subsequently arrested under the Mental Health Act and taken away by ambulance. Eye witnesses at the set of shops and businesses where the office is located reported seeing up to 10 police vehicles, fire engines, and an ambulance at the cordoned-off scene. The man caused alarm to staff and customers, but nobody was harmed during the incident. The Beresford Building, which houses the JobCentre and a number of other offices, was temporarily evacuated, along with two nearby shops. An eyewitness to the commotion told the Gazette: "There was at least 10 police, fire engines and an ambulance. …
