WHEN Kate Lundy first set foot on a building site, it was as a labourer after she dropped out of high school in Canberra.

Yesterday, the Australian Capital Territory senator walked on to a construction site at Sippy Downs to endorse a project aimed at encouraging more women into the construction industry.

The Women into Building Housing Showcase site on Creekside Boulevard is being built completely by a talented female workforce.

The idea was led by award-winning Sunshine Coast builder Sam Sheppard, and Ms Lundy was on site to lend her support as a formal patron of the project.

aI heard about the project and was asked to be patron,a Ms Lundy said.

aI come from a building and construction industry background and this is about trying to open doors for women to work in the building industry.

aI was a labourer after I left school at 16, removing asbestos.

aI knew a couple of women in the industry but it was less than 1% at that time. …
