Laver History Maintained; Courts Where Tennis Champ Learned His Style Boasts Upgrade

SUE Young and a small band of dedicated tennis players are doing their bit to preserve a special piece of Rockhampton's sporting history.

Sue is president of Rod Laver Court Tennis Club, Park Avenue, where Australia champion and Rockhampton's favourite son, Rod Laver learned to play and perfect his game.

Thanks to a grant of $28,892.60 from the Queensland Government's Gambling Community Benefit Fund and the generosity of local landscape suppliers, the club has not only been able to maintain the Rod Laver Tennis Court facility, but expand its facilities for future generations.

The benefit fund grant has enabled the club to erect a new boundary fence, resurface the sand court, construct a small shed to house the motorised roller, repaint the club house and install court lighting for night play.
