Boxing Day Gets Tougher for Pool

Hartlepool United 1 Yeovil Town 1 AS if Hartlepool United's Boxing Day task isn't hard enough, they must also go into action without top scorer Andy Monkhouse.

The left-winger scored Pool's leveller against Yeovil, his seventh goal of the season earning a point, but he was also booked. And his fifth caution of the season means he must miss the game at Leeds United.

"I've got to be totally honest, but I'm amazed it has taken so long for him to get the fifth booking, he's been on four for a while," said director of sport Chris Turner.

"The unfortunate thing is he is playing against a team from his own town and he will have been looking forward to that fixture.

"It's a blow, but at least he will be fresh for the Monday game with Oldham."

Pool don't have a busy Festive programme, their trip to Leeds is followed by Oldham and then that's it until going to Charlton on January 9. By then plenty of the walking wounded should be back in action and it showed on Saturday how badly they were affected by having seven players on the sidelines.

Turner's options from the bench were limited, meaning the improved secondhalf performance was essential from the players on the park.

Yeovil took the lead in a flat first-half, as Sam Williams shot past Scott Flinders from 16 yards. Neither side looked comfortable on the icy and snowy surface in the first period and it was only after the restart when Pool upped their game when they looked happy.

Adam Boyd and Antony Sweeney combined for the equaliser, the latter's pass down the touchline taken in his stride by the striker who crossed low for Monkhouse to touch in.

Boyd was three times denied by goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, while Monkhouse had the chance to win it late on, blasting over after Armann Bjornsson nodded down for the scorer.
