Christmas Joy Returned; Generous Community Gives Family Hope after Robbery

MACKAY: Thieves stole Christmas from Peter Webb and his family, but the Mackay community has given it back.

Mr Webb decided he was going to skip Christmas after arriving home from hospital with his partner, Karen Tetley, who had just suffered a heart attack, and discovering that everything from presents to teabags had been stolen.

However, Mr Webb has now had a change of heart thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the public since the story of the Slade Point theft was featured in Saturday's Daily Mercury.

"I hated Christmas when we got home," he said.

"I thought if this is what Christmas is about I don't want anything to do with it anymore.

"But since this community outpour... we are just awestruck."

Yesterday Centrelink staff hand-delivered a hamper overflowing with food to the Amhurst Street home of Mr Webb, his partner Karen and her four children.

Centrelink staff also organised for the family's regular payment to be made in advance. …
