Whitehall Top Job Promises Prove to Be False; Pledge to Bring 'Sir Humphreys' North

PROMISES of thousands of civil service jobs coming to Tyneside have proved false.

The posts were pledged for the region when the Government announced in 2004 it would be relocating jobs away from the capital.

Up to 20,000 jobs should have moved from in Whitehall to the rest of the country in a move that could have saved pounds 78m in office costs alone.

But just 494 jobs have been relocated to the North East, according to new figures.

Many departments admitted they have no staff in the region and have no intention of relocating any here.

Newcastle Council leader John Shipley has called on the Government to give the civil service a "grounding in the provinces" and warned the region was one of many losing out.

He said: "Moving these jobs is vital to enable those making decisions to see for themselves the impact of their actions and to take decisions that benefit everyone. "We as a country get much better. …
