NORTON powerlifter James Connell made up for his world championship pull-out with a double British title win in Wales.

The 32-year-old was unable to make his WPF world championship debut in Las Vegas last month due to a family illness.

But he ensured he finished the year on a high by winning both the BPO British bench press and deadlift titles for the 125-kilogram category.

The father-of-three heaved 202.5 kilograms to win the bench press and 282.5kg to take the deadlift event in Swansea.

Both are new British records and take his tally of domestic titles to four this year, adding to previous BPO English and British powerlifting victories, which qualified him for the Worlds.

"It was soul-destroying not being able to go to Las Vegas, because I'd lived my whole life around preparing for it," said Connell, who works as a sports manager at David Lloyd Teesside.

"I'd eaten it, breathed it and slept it, which was the reason I did this competition. …
