EAT, drink and be healthy this Christmas with the following top 10 tips from the health trainers at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust.

1 Shopping for last minute Christmas presents can burn off calories.

Health trainer team leader Sally Sayers says: "You can burn off a couple of mince pies-worth of calories just by shopping for those last-minute presents. The exercise will refresh your mind and body and leaves you less stressed."

2 Do something positive and make those changes, says senior health trainer, Denise Murphy.

"You could go for a walk with family or friends instead of sitting in front of the television. Go out and visit a friend or relative who would be otherwise left on their own. By increasing your level of physical activity you can really improve your health."

3 Know how much you can safely drink for a healthy Christmas, says senior health trainer, Andy Banks. "Women shouldn't drink more than two to three units a day or 14 units a week and men no more than three to four units a day or 21 units a week.

Drinking plenty of water should be part of everyone's healthy, balanced diet - but it's especially important at Christmas when you may be drinking more alcohol than normal."

4 Relax and take some time out for yourself, advises senior health trainer, Jo Walkington (main picture).

"Do something that you find relaxing, like spending time with your friends or listening to music," says Jo.

5 Don't skip meals during the holidays. Senior health trainer Fran Hall says: "Make sure you don't skip meals, either on Christmas Day or during the festive holiday. It's important to eat breakfast to keep your energy levels up. If you are going to snack during the day, try to go for fruit rather than chocolates."

6 Keep fit while having fun, says senior health trainer, Gillian Oliver. …
