A COUPLE whose wedding day was hampered by heavy snow have celebrated their Diamond anniversary.

With wintry weather stranding cars -much like the country's current big freeze -John and Sadie Quick and their wedding party were forced to reach Guisborough Register Office on a single-deck bus on December 17, 1949. The service bus was one of few vehicles which could safely negotiate icy Yearby Bank after their taxi failed to turn up. So with time pressing, they all boarded the bus at Redcar.

Sadie laughed: "We only just made it. And it was so cold, I was really shivering."

So moved was the bus conductress by the wedding party's predicament, she gave bride Sadie a silver threepenny bit -a coin she keeps to this day in the blue pouch which carried her wedding ring.

But there was no such luck for the wedding photographer, who failed to make it to the wedding on time.

To mark John and Sadie's Golden wedding anniversary 10 years ago, the Gazette arranged a commemorative photoshoot. …
