Mystery Donor Astounds Home; Akooramak's Early Christmas Gift

IMAGINE opening a letter and a cheque for more than $70,000 flutters from the envelope.

It wasn't a lotto win but a kind and generous donation to the Warwick Benevolent Society (Akooramak) from an unknown benefactor.

Warwick Benevolent Society president Doug Cutmore's eyes boggled when he saw the $76,000 cheque, which arrived without warning or fanfare in the post last week.

"In my 10 years of involvement with Akooramak, this is by far the most substantial donation we have received," Mr Cutmore said.

"As we have no way of knowing who the generous benefactor might be, we wanted to sincerely thank this thoughtful person or persons or their family's generosity toward the care of older folk."

Akooramak is a registered charity catering for about 100 residents and has about 100 staff and volunteers who walk the halls.

"Akooramak belongs to the community and we are eternally grateful to our committed and caring management team and staff and to the unselfish volunteers who give so freely of their time, talents and substance in service to their fellow human beings in their latter years," Mr Cutmore said. …
