HERE'S one story that is definitely in keeping with the spirit of the season.

An English tourist called around the resorts on Fraser Island last week after leaving two valuable rings at Central Station - and when Jay Harney heard about it, he and two friends were anxious to help out.

The woman had removed her rings and left them on a post while she put sunscreen on her kids and she forgot to put them back on.

The rings, an eternity ring and an engagement ring, weren't just valuable in terms of money - they also had a lot of sentimental value for her and, when she discovered she had left them behind, Mr Harney said she was quite upset.

She offered a reward for the return of the rings but Mr Harney said that wasn't what motivated him and his friends, Zoe Reghenzani and Brian Harding, to find them.

"It (the reward) was a fair bit - but there were plenty of diamonds on those rings," Mr Harney said wryly.

"We didn't care about that - it was the right thing to do. …
