BAY COASTGUARD SAVES 4 BOATIES AT CARLO Drivers Were Well-Behaved over Christmas

TIN Can Bay Coastguard officers rescued four people at the weekend, after the group and their four-metre tinny became stranded near Carlo Point, Coastguard Commander Jim George said yesterday.

Commander George began a search for the four after being called by Hervey Bay water police about 12.25am on Sunday.

He learned that the party had failed to return from what was supposed to be a brief 6pm venture to set crab pots.

The four, on holidays from Nerang, were unfamiliar with Tin Can Inlet and had become disoriented after being caught up in the tide and left stranded and disoriented in shallow water not far from their starting point at the Carlo boat ramp.

The party comprised a father and his daughter, 16, and two sisters from another family, aged eight and 11.

aThey had been out for about six hours when I got the call,a Commander George said yesterday.

aThey had run aground and did not know which way to go, not knowing their way to deeper water. Unfortunately, they did not have phones or radios to call for help.a

Commander George said he and another Coastguard officer put their smaller boat in the water and found the missing party about 2am.

aWhere they were, they would have been there all night if we hadn't found them.

aWe basically motored into the shallows and were able to yell out and make contact.

aWe had our spotlight and we were hoping to get a signal from them.

aLuckily they had a torch on board and they flashed it.

aWe went as far as we could into the shallows and when we couldn't go any further, we shut down.

aWe weren't operational. We were in only about 15cm of water and had to switch off our motors.

aWe told them to walk towards us, dragging their boat.

aThen we threw them a line, pushed our boat back into deeper water and returned them to Carlo Point about 2. …
