Bates Blames "Lottery" Defeat on the Weather

STEVE Bates admits restart trouble probably cost his men victory yesterday - but he stopped well short of laying into his charges.

At the end of a hard week's snow clearing, yesterday's game finally came around after most of the Falcons' playing staff shoveled the pitch snow-free one last time as early as 7.30am.

But when the game finally got under way, all their hard work still came unstuck.

That the Falcons switched off at the crucial time right after their own scores was a frustration for Bates and Co - but given the circumstances it was nothing to panic about.

The Falcons rugby director said: "It was very disappointing to lose but I don't think you can underestimate the importance and impact of the conditions on a game like that.

"Conditions like that will make any game a complete mess.

"I was a bit disappointed with one or two of the restarts, but again I think conditions were pretty influential in that.

"It has been a really big effort to put the game on and I don't think you can criticise any of the players for a shortage of effort. …
