THE United Kingdom is an oft-gloomy place a weatherwise at least.

More often than not, it rains.

If there is no rain, there is fog.

If there is no rain and no fog, there is probably smog.

And if there is no rain and no fog and no smog, chances are they have hopped on a plane and woken up somewhere in Australia.

Not long after the transported prisoners aboard the First Fleet realised they may not have received such a raw deal after all, citizens of the United Kingdom realised they had a romantic attachment to the land Down Under.

As one visitor so delicately put it, ait's like back home but with a sun and a decent beach, ain't it?a Which may explain the unflagging appeal of Australian soapies and their stars all the way over in Old Blighty and her surrounds.

If the mass exodus of Aussie soapie starlets across the other side of the world for Christmas pantomime performances hadn't tipped you off to that fact already, then there is always Wikipedia a at one stage Neighbours had more than 18 million viewers in the UK, which was more than the population of Australia at the time.

But if there is one thing our UK cousins have when it comes to the lives of those living in fictional Aussie boroughs and bays, it is loyalty.

Oh a and a long memory.

More than a decade after Jim Robinson took his final breath in the kitchen of his Ramsay Street home, the victim of an unscrupulous girlfriend and cardiac arrest, many UK viewers remember the anguish.

Long-time loyal viewers of Neighbours can tell you what Paul Robinson was like the first time around, before the Alessi twins hit the scene and that was in the early '90s.
