No End in Sight to Snow Misery

BRITISH sport looks set for further disruption over the coming week with no immediate end in sight to the current spell of wintry weather.

Both of this week's Carling Cup semi-final first legs were postponed due to heavy snow and their rearrangements for later this month have had a knock-on effect on Premier League fixtures.

The racing programme has been decimated and there are fears of more postponements ahead with most of the country expected to be covered in snow by tonight.

After that the skies will clear but sub-zero temperatures will mean conditions will remain treacherous.

Access to venues is as much, and in the case of top-level football more, of a problem as the condition of the playing surface.

Both of the Carling Cup ties -last night's clash between Blackburn and Aston Villa and tonight's eagerly-anticipated Manchester City v Manchester United derby -were called off because of problems in the surrounding areas and major roads.

City and United will now try again on January 19, the date originally scheduled for the second leg, with the return on January 27. United and City have had league clashes against Hull and Stoke respectively postponed as a result.

City chief executive Garry Cook said: "It is a huge disappointment for everyone that we have had to postpone the tie but we have had the kind of harsh weather unseen in this part of the world for years and years.

"In the end everyone who was part of the discussions was unanimous that it would have been too dangerous to play the game as scheduled."

The weather has caused havoc with racing's national hunt schedule.

Yesterday's meetings at Leicester and Taunton were abandoned, along with Southwell and Hexham today and Ludlow and Huntingdon tomorrow.

A rugby league friendly between Leigh and Super League side Salford, originally scheduled for December 27 but rearranged for last night, was also called off. …
