AN INTREPID brigade's battle against the elements has netted more than pounds 4,000 for a Teesside baby hospice.

Cyclists from the BP CATS Terminal at Seal Sands handed over the bumper amount to Zoe's Place following their coast-to-coast cycle route.

Accompanied by three other colleagues driving support vehicles, their 187-mile route took them from Whitehaven to Tynemouth.

Electrical technician Ben Hunt, who organised the trip, said it had been full of surprises - right from the off.

He said: "Before we set off one of our support drivers fell ill. Then as soon as we started the weather turned unbelievably bad.

"In the gales a tree branch fell onto someone's handlebars and five miles before the end we lost a rider.

"To top it all we got lost at Kielder Water and met a runaway cow! By the time we had completed the route we'd had 15 punctures, lost a bike and lost a cyclist!" The riders raised a total of pounds 2,215 in sponsorship from friends and family, which is being matched by BP, bringing the total to pounds 4,430. …
