IT WASN'T the extreme heat that beat Maryborough cyclist Malcolm Rudolph in Victoria on Saturday.

One of his Australian Institute of Sport/Jayco Skins Racing Team team-mates did.

Michael Hepburn won the Australian Open Road Championship under 23 crown after winning a two-man sprint down the home straight with Rudolph at the end of the 122.4km race in Buninyong.

Rudolph, who finished third in the under 23 men's criterium championship during the nationals titles in Ballarat on Thursday, said he only had himself to blame for finishing the gruelling race with silver and not gold.

"I made a bit of a meal of the sprint and that was that," the former St Mary's College student said.

"Don't get me wrong, I am pleased for Michael because he's my team-mate but it would have been better if it was me who won it," he laughed.

As for the race itself, Rudolph, who signed for the team this year, he said the conditions during it had been far from ideal for cycling. …
