A CROWD of more than 1000 basked in glorious sunshine at the Ipswich racetrack Saturday, backing another successful St Mary's Parish race day.

The fifth annual event involved eight races, with sponsorship money helping the parish raise funds to improve the picturesque Woodend church's facilities.

Father Peter Casey said the race day was also an important social outing for the church's 1000 parishioners.

"Over the last five years we've raised $65,000 through sponsorship and ticket sales, including $13,000 or $14,000 yesterday," Fr Casey said.

"The support we get is very valuable and much appreciated."

Though not a betting man, Fr Casey got into the spirit of the occasion by putting $5 each way on Brother Patrick in Sydney.

The horse crossed the line first, netting Fr Casey a modest $25.

Thrills of backing a winner aside, the 104-year old St Mary's church requires urgent attention to ensure it lives on for another century. …
