Edwards to Lead Defense; New Gators Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach Has NFL Pedigree

Florida coach Urban Meyer hired Miami Dolphins assistant coach George Edwards to be the Gators' assistant head coach and defensive coordinator and promoted safeties coach Chuck Heater to co-defensive coordinator.

Edwards, who began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Florida in 1991, replaces Charlie Strong, who left to become the head coach at Louisville. Heater was Strong's assistant defensive coordinator.

"George is a tremendous teacher of the game of football," Meyer said. "He has proven himself at the highest level in the National Football League, but his roots started at the college level at Florida and in the SEC. He is a great addition to our staff and will be a great coach and mentor to our players."

Edwards spent the past 12 seasons in the NFL, including the past five with the Miami Dolphins as a linebackers coach. He coached linebackers in Cleveland in 2004 and spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons in Washington. He was the Redskins' defensive coordinator in '03. …
