Senior school students studying at the Vocational Campus @ Wide Bay TAFE enjoy the best of two worlds in this unusual cross between a TAFE campus and a high school that gives students a head-start with their career.

Students study three subjects, English, mathematics and one other alongside their TAFE Certificate whereas in most other secondary programs they take six subjects and a small number of students do certificate programs as an extra.

In 2008 seven out of 10 Year 12 students graduated with a partly completed apprenticeship or traineeship or at least one vocational training certificate, and 41 per cent received a Queensland Certificate of Education as well.

Program coordinator Allan Perry said the advantage over other Year 11 and 12 programs was that students could study their chosen TAFE vocational certificates and QCE accredited subjects simultaneously.

"Students graduating from Year 12 can fast track TAFE Diploma programs and end up reducing their program by a year which means they are well ahead of others in their chosen career," Mr Perry said. …
