Building's Finished, but Where Are the Patients? Critics Claim Floors Botched

IT'S more than four months since Queensland Premier Anna Bligh came to Yeppoon to see the finishing touches being made to the town's new $21.5 million hospital.

The hospital was due to be handed over to Queensland Health by builders at the end of September - but it remains closed to patients.

And Queensland Health couldn't say yesterday when the facility would open.

The authority said yesterday minor rectifications to finishes were being made and the contractor for the project was working to complete those rectifications.

In response to specific questions raised by a whistleblower about the delay, a spokesman for Queensland Health denied that the floor in the emergency department had to be dug up and replaced.

"There has been some additional sealing of vinyl in various parts of the hospital," the spokesman said.

There were similar denials that the rectifications centred on a poorly designed kitchen and that central-heating conduits had to be dug again. …
