BLAYDON and Northumbria University duo Andrew Archibald and Mark Wilson are primed to make their full England Students debuts in Portugal later this month.

The Crow Trees forward pair are expected to be named in the starting line-up for England's clash with the Portugal national side at the Est[sz]dio Universit[sz]rio de Lisboa on January 27.

England Students will start their season's campaign in Lisbon before entertaining Irish Colleges in Newcastle on February 26 and then travelling to take on France Universities at Riom in March.

Back-rower Wilson joined Blaydon this summer from Kendal as he took up a place at Northumbria.

He rose to prominence with Newcastle Falcons when he turned out for the senior side in the Anglo-Welsh Cup.

The abrasive looseforward has been in sterling form for Blaydon either side of his short-term loan to the Falcons, with whom he has been training wherever possible.

Second-row Archibald has been at Blaydon since the tender age of seven, coming through the ranks to make his senior debut aged just 17.

Delighted Blaydon rugby director Tom Rock hailed the duo's achievement and tipped them to make a telling impact.

Rock said: "It is a great honour and privilege for the club to have players going on to this kind of representative level, but more than that it is fantastic for the two guys.

"This is an experience like no other that they will always cherish, and on top of that I am sure both players will add a lot to the England side.

"Mark has rightly won a lot of plaudits this season with his back-row play, even managing first-team action with the Falcons - which is no mean feat.

"He has been very impressive and this is another well-deserved feather in his cap.

"We are really pleased for Andrew too, though, because he has worked extremely hard and put in telling performances this season.

"He has not been so heralded, so it is great for him to be given his opportunity and I have no doubt he will grab it with both hands."

Archibald and Wilson are among six North East students seeking to achieve national sporting honours with England. …
