Dixon's Graced with Tennis Talent; Whickham Ace Serves Up New Year Title Double

TYNESIDE tennis ace Grace Dixon has made an ace start to the the New Year - by claiming two major singles titles.

Grace aged 13, who lives in Whickham, took the Aegon Junior International under-14 title in Wrexham.

She progressed to the semi-final without dropping a set, where she faced tough opponent Roos van der Zwaan from the Netherlands.

In a closely-fought contest, Grace came through in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 to face Estonia's Tatjana Vorobjova in the final.

Vorobjova had looked in good form throughout the tournament, but Grace cruised to the title 6-2, 6-4 and clocked up her second Tennis Europe tournament this winter.

The Newcastle High School pupil added to that success with a comfortable doubles victory with partner Daniella Silva from Portugal.

Grace then moved on to the Under-14 Grand Prix in Bolton.

She took top honours again by beating players from Wiltshire, Nottinghamshire and Scotland to reach the semi-finals against Warwickshire's Allanah Griffin.

Fighting an ankle injury, Grace picked up where she left off in her quarter-final, taking the match 6-3, 6-4 to face Lancashire's Sabrina Federici in the decider.

A display of precise, powerful tennis saw the youngster emerge victorious against Federici 6-4, 6-3 to take the title, her second British Grand Prix title this winter. …
