Yorkshire Grit Wins out as Shoddy Spartans Slip Up

BLYTH Spartans crashed out of the FA Trophy against 10-man Guiseley last night to leave manager Mick Tait scratching his head.

Blyth created a number of chances in the first half against the UniBond Premier Division side after gifting the Yorkshiremen an 11th-minute lead.

Guiseley then had central defender Danny s Ellis sent off in the 38th minute for a shirt pull on Paul Brayson, but the Spartans failed to capitalise.

Just as against Eastwood earlier in the season, Tait's men were outgunned by a side playing the entire second half a man short.

Guiseley doubled the lead as Blyth struggled in all areas with the defence particularly shaky, and it took an own goal six minutes from time to give them a lifeline.

But Guiseley deservedly hung on, with some of the 350 crowd at Croft Park booing the home side off at the end.

It was a disappointing return to action after a month of inactivity and a costly one as the pounds 6,000 prize money headed to Yorkshire.

Tait said: "We didn't show enough desire to win the game and we have gone out of the FA Trophy with a whimper. …
